Instrument Rating (IR & CBIR)
Instrument Rating (IR & CBIR)
The Instrument Rating (IR) allows pilots to fly in instrument meteorological conditions and operate under IFR. For many pilots, this is the next step after gaining a PPL or CPL.
There are two main training routes to achieve the IR, depending on your previous experience. Pilots with little or no instrument experience normally complete the full Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (MEIR) course. Pilots who already have some instrument training or relevant experience may be able to complete the Competency-Based Instrument Rating (CB-IR), which allows previous training to be credited.
Before starting training, a pre-entry assessment is carried out to review your logbook and current instrument flying ability. This helps determine which route is most suitable and allows the training programme to be tailored to your experience.
Training concludes with the Instrument Rating skills test with a CAA examiner, after which the Instrument Rating is added to your licence.
Course Prerequisites
- Valid Multi Engine Piston (MEP) Rating (for the MEIR) - Valid Class 1 or Class 2 Medical, depending on your licence
Course Theory Exams:
- ATPL or IR theory exams for the authority you will be applying to, either EASA or UK CAA. - The instrument flight instruction and the IR(A) skill test must be completed within 36 months of the pass of the theory exams.
Theory Requirements
- Completion of ATPL or IR theoretical examinations (UK CAA or EASA, depending on your licence route) - Flight training and the IR(A) Skills Test must be completed within 36 months of passing the final theory exam
Course Structure
- CPL holders: 35 hours total instrument training - Non-CPL holders: 45 hours total instrument training - Alternatively, a minimum of 15 hours in a multi-engine aircraft are required if credits of up to 30 hours are granted for prior IR training
All pathways include:
- Minimum 15 hours of Multi Engine Instrument training - Remaining hours conducted on an FNPT II simulator - IR Skills Test with a CAA-authorised examiner
The course can also be completed in a single-engine aircraft configuration, details available on request.
All pricing is structured to include the full cost of training. There are no additional landing fees, fuel surcharges or unexpected add-ons beyond the published breakdown.
