Instrument Rating (Restricted)
(Also known as IMC, a UK Only Rating)
An IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) Rating allows you to fly in conditions where cloud and visibility are below that required for the PPL (3km).
The IMC course requires a minimum of 15 hours training of instrument flying with an instructor in a suitably equipped dual control aeroplane as well as a written ground exam and IMC flight test with an examiner. Along with the normal flying manoeuvres you will learn to use VOR, ADF, and DME instrument approaches using the ILS or VOR/DME and NDB aids.
This course requires concentration and preparation but will increase your flying skills and your confidence.
The total hours required to pass this rating will vary depending on the student’s experience and aptitude.
